What is Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings about?
Directed by Destin Daniel Creighton, Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings introduced the MCU character Shang-Chi. Shang-Chi played Simu Liu in the title role, also starring Awkwafina, Tony Chiu-Wai Leung, Michelle Yeoh, Florian Munteanu, and more. It is the first Marvel film to have an Asian lead and a predominantly Asian cast. The film follows the story of young martial artist Shang-Chi, who passes on his family legacy from his criminal father Wenwu (Leung), leader of the Ten Rings organization and true Mandarin, to his powerful mother (Yoh). His new life in San Francisco. But in the end, his past comes back to find him.
The film's trailer shows scenes from Shang-chi's youth as a budding warrior and focuses on the Ten Rings himself, with Wenwu saying that Shang-chi must be strong enough to carry the Rings. The trailer reveals elements of the power of the Rings, as well as the mysterious magic of Shang-Chi's mother (and a brief glimpse of a dragon). Notably, the trailer also confirmed Benedict Wong to play Wong, a familiar face to Marvel fans and perhaps an indicator that the film will tie into the events of the next Doctor Strange installment.
Disney has reported that Shang-Chi will receive 45 days of theatrical release, but it is unclear if the film will appear on Disney+ immediately after those 45 days. We'll keep this post updated as we learn more about the film's Disney+ release date.
